The cycling community was rocked on May 11th, 2022 with news that Moriah Wilson was shot and killed in Austin, Texas, where she was preparing to compete in her next gravel event. In less than three years of gravel and mountain bike racing, Moriah – now more often known as “Mo” – became the winningest off-road cyclist in America. In 2015, she wrote that she wanted to “be the kind of person that picks other people up when they fall down, who’s there for people when they need support, encouragement, and inspiration.” This year, drawing upon the same values, she wrote that her mission was to “inspire people to ride bikes and be active” and “promote positive body image awareness for women, and female athletes in particular.” More than anything, Moriah believed in the power of community, for it was her communities that shaped her.
Members of our company first met Mo after her win at the 2022 Rock Cobbler gravel race and again after her commanding win at the 2022 Belgian Waffle Ride (BWR). Her infectious grin and abilities on and off the bike made her a fan favorite and inspiration for nearly everyone that met her. Like Mo, community is of critical importance to us here at Rouleur Brewing Company. After hearing of the horrible news, we reached out to her family and were quickly welcomed by her brother, Matt Wilson. Our goal was simple, we wanted to help keep the memory of Mo alive, celebrate Mo for who she was and what she represented, and give back by offering to brew a beer to raise funds for her foundation: The Moriah Wilson Foundation.
When it came time to choose a beer style, the decision came easily and naturally. First off, according to her brother, Matt, a New England IPA (also known as a Hazy IPA) was one of Mo's go-to beer styles and, secondly, Mo grew up in Vermont which was the birthplace of the New England IPA style. It doesn't hurt that the Hazy IPA is currently one of America's most popular beer styles.
Starting today, July 13th, we are pre-selling four-packs of MoMentum Hazy IPA, with 100% of the profits going to the Moriah Wilson Foundation (www.mowilsonfoundation.org) which is committed to honoring Moriah "by keeping her dreams alive – by supporting each other in our communities and inspiring and helping others get outside, ride bikes, and live healthy lives."
NOTE: This is a pre-order store. It will be open until August 1st, 2022, allowing us to gauge volume for production planning. From there, we will brew the beer, package it, and ship off orders by September 1st, 2022.
We are honored to be given the chance to work with Mo's family and brew this very special beer.
Kind regards and cheers,
Rawley Macias and the Rouleur Brewing Company Crew
